Cavaliers Walk Off Diamond Heels In 10
April 23, 2022 | Baseball
The Cavaliers (30-10, 12-8 ACC) scored their first run of the frame on a sacrifice, but it was the second out of the inning. Two singles and two walks allowed the next two runs to score as Griff O'Ferrall scored the tying run on a base hit from Alex Tappen. Jake Gelof was then intentionally walked to set up a force play at any base, brining Ortiz to the plate.
Tappen, who was slotted as the Cavaliers No. 3 hitter, finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored as was one of six UVA batters to collected multiple hits in their 17-hit attack. Kyle Teel led the way with four hits.
Virginia's number two through six hitters were a combined 13-of-24 with nine RBIs.
Carolina led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Cavaliers took the lead as the first three batters singled to tie the game before Chris Newell laced a two-out single to right field, driving in the go-ahead run.
UNC starting hurler Brandon Schaeffer pitched into the sixth inning without issuing a walk and striking out three before turning the game over to the bullpen. The Tar Heels used seven relievers to finish the game.
Hunter Stokely tied the game with a bases loaded single in the seventh only to watch UVA retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Alberto Osuna crushed a 461-foot home run to center field to lead off the top of the ninth and a double play in the bottom half sent the game into extra innings.
Paul Kosanovich (2-0) picked up the win for Virginia, while Gage Gillian (1-3) took the loss.
