Sands & Tarragano Take Second & Third At LakeFront Invitational
October 3, 2025 | Cross Country
"Our two older, well-established guys, Colton and Tomer ran great up front," Head coach Chris Miltenberg said. "Today was a great learning experience for our younger guys, and I think there's a lot we can take to make us way better and come back and close the gap on those teams that made us today."
Sands (23:21.59) and Tarragano (23:22.42) battled in the lead pack from the start, moving up in the pack as they came out of the 5k marker. Sands moved from fifth to second, and Tarragano improved from fourth to third. Jack Bowen (24:26.29) made his college debut as the fourth Tar Heel to cross the finish line as he finished in 45th.
"Today was a challenging day, but it's a great reminder of the challenges that are ahead of us. Our women have had a a tough week, battling some illness and getting everybody back going," Miltenberg said.
Ciara O'Shea's top-15 finish led the way for the women's team as she finished in 11th. O'Shea improved throughout the entire race. At the 1k marker, she was sitting in 31st. O'Shea jumped into 20th, then 18th every 2k before settling into 11th for an excellent finish.
"The women that we brought competed great. I thought Ciara showed great progress highlighting how much better she is gonna get over the next several weeks," Miltenberg said.
