Baseball Opens NCAA Regional With Win Over Hofstra

With the win, the Tar Heels (39-19) advance to the winner's bracket to face VCU Saturday at 7 p.m., while Hofstra (30-22) will take on Georgia at 1 p.m.
Mac Horvath went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored, while Colby Wilkerson and Angel Zarate also collected three hits each. The Tar Heels (39-19) hit five total home runs with Tomas Frick, Danny Serretti and Vance Honeycutt also going deep.
Max Carlson (4-2) earned his third straight postseason winning, allowing three runs in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. After giving up a solo home run in each of the first two innings, Carlson scattered three hits over his final 3.2 innings before being lifted in the sixth.
Horvath broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run and the Heels never trailed again. UNC scored in each of the first five innings and led 6-3 after 6.5 innings.
In the seventh, Carolina erupted for seven runs highlighted by Honeycutt's three-run home run. Wilkerson had an RBI single, and Zarate slapped a two-run single as part of the scoring.
Santino Rosso led the Pride with three hits, including a pair of home runs.
NOTABLES
• Horvath became the first UNC player to hit multiple home runs in an NCAA Tournament game since Aaron Sabato in game three of the 2019 Super Regional against Auburn. It was the first multi-home run game in a regional since Garrett Gore hit two in the 2009 Chapel Hill Regional against Kansas.
• It was Horvath's second multi-home run game of the season. He also hit a pair of home runs against Charlotte on May 3.
• Frick's home run was his second of the season. His only previous home run of the year was a grand slam against Longwood on March 1.
• The Tar Heels' five home runs are their most since hitting five against Liberty during the 2019 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
• With its five home runs today, the Tar Heels have hit 91 home runs this season. It's the fourth time in school history that a team has hit 90 homers in a season.
• Carolina's 15 runs were its most since in regional game since scoring 16 against Liberty in 2019.
• Honeycutt his 22nd home run of the season, moving into a tie for third place on the school's single season list. The UNC single season record is 24, set by Devy Bell in 1986.
• Wilkerson's three hits were a season-high and his most since collecting four against Duke on April 12, 2021.
• All nine starters got a hit and eight of them scored a run.

Top-seeded North Carolina will face either No. 2 Georgia or No. 3 VCU in the winner's bracket on Saturday, June 4, at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on the ESPN+.
