Baseball Suffers Third Straight Loss At UVA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia scored eight runs across the first three innings and defeated visiting North Carolina, 10-3, at Disharoon Park on Sunday.
Virginia starter Jake Berry (5-2) limited the Diamond Heels (23-17, 8-13 ACC) to two runs on four hits in five innings with six strikeouts. Carolina's lone earned run off Berry was Mac Horvath's solo homer in the third inning. UNC's other run came in the sixth inning after Virginia (31-10, 13-8) committed two errors.
Carolina collected six hits total with Horvath getting two of them, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, RBI and run scored. He had one of Carolina's four doubles in the game.
The Cavaliers scored the game's first seven runs, two on two-run homer by Alex Tappen in the first followed by five runs on seven hits – all singles in the second inning – sending nine men to the plate. Max Cotier and Jake Gelof each recorded an RBI-single, while Griff O'Ferrall posted a 2-run single and Kyle Teel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Virginia racked up 16 hits with five players recording multiple hits. Ethan Anderson collected a game-high three hits.
UNC junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Mott (6-3) made his first career start in in a Tar Heel uniform but lasted only 1.1 innings after allowing six runs on five hits. Carolina used six pitchers in all with Connor Ollio throwing a team-high 2.2 innings without allowing a run and striking out three.
NOTABLES
• Serretti collected his 49th career double of the season, moving into a tie for 10th with Dan Moylan on the school's all-time list. He also extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games.
• Stokely extended also extended his career-long hitting streak, which now stands at eight games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tappen homered to left field in the top of the first after Kyle Teel was hit by a pitch (UVA 2, UNC 0).
• Cotier and Gelof each recorded an RBI-single, O'Ferrall posted a 2-run single and Teel lifted a sacrifice to center field in the bottom of the second (UVA 7, UNC 0).
• Horvath homered to left field in the top of the third inning (UVA 7, UNC 1).
• Cotier singled through the right side in bottom of the third inning to plate Ethan Anderson (UVA 8, UNC 1).
• Mikey Madej's sacrifice fly scored Horvath in the bottom of the sixth (UVA 8, UNC 2).
• Johnny Castagnozzi doubled to left-center field to score Osuna from first base in the top of the eighth (UVA 8, UNC 3).
• Keel recorded an RBI-double and Gelof hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth (UVA 10, UNC 3).
