Game One Of Weekend Baseball Series Goes To Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia hit solo home runs in second, seventh and eighth innings and the No. 11 Cavaliers defeated North Carolina, 4-2, at Disharoon Park on Friday night.
The Diamond Heels (23-15, 8-11 ACC) threatened in the first as Mac Horvath doubled off the right field wall and Danny Serretti followed with a one-out walk but stranded him. Virginia took advantage of a two-out walk in the bottom half of the inning to take an early 1-0 lead and threatened to add more.
However, Max Carlson struck out Chris Newell with runners at second and third to end the inning.
Carolina and Virginia exchanged solo home runs in the second with Mikey Madej leading off the top half of the inning with a homer and Colin Tuft answering with a one-out dinger.
Carlson surrendered just one hit over the next four innings and only allowed one runner to reach second base.
The first two UNC batters reached to start the sixth inning and Hunter Stokely laced a one-out single to load the bases. Vance Honeycutt then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field to drive in Johnny Castagnozzi to tie the game at 2-all.
Following a one-out walk to Angel Zarate, UVA coach Brian O'Conner made a pitching change that resulted in a strikeout by Jay Woolfolk to end the inning with UNC leaving the bases loaded.
After Carlson retired the first two batters, he faced in the seventh, Griff O'Ferrall broke the tie with a home run to left. Carlson (1-2) finished the game with 112 pitches in 6.2 innings and four strikeouts.
Alex Tappen homered to left field to lead off the eighth inning and the Heels went down in order in the ninth.
Woolfolk and Brandon Neeck combined for six strikeouts in the final 3.1 innings with Woolfolk earning the win and Neeck picking up the save.

• Carlson matched his career-high with 6.2 innings pitched and threw a career-high 112 pitches.
• Madej hit his second home run of the season and first from the right side. Last Friday against Georgia Tech, he homered from the left side of the plate.
• Stokely singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to six games, matching his career-long streak. He has multiple hits in four of the last five games and an extra base hit in four of the last six, including a double tonight.
