CHAPEL HILL – Kevin Parada hit two home runs and drove in four runs, Andrew Jenkins had four hits and three RBIs and Drew Compton drove in three runs as visiting Georgia Tech topped North Carolina 15-12 on Friday night, sending the Diamond Heels to their fourth straight loss.
UNC (21-13, 7-9 ACC) out-hit the Yellow Jackets (22-13, 8-8), 14-12, while each team hit four home runs.
Parada connected against Max Carlson two batters into the game to stake Tech to a 2-0 lead, and added another first inning run on a wild pitch. The Jackets reached Carlson for three more runs in the second and chased him with two outs in the second after drawing their fourth walk of the game.
Carolina was ahead 6-5 at the end of two innings as Mikey Madej hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Angel Zarate crushed a two-run homer in the second inning. The Heels led by a run after three innings.
Georgia Tech scored 10 runs between the fourth and eighth inning, while UNC plated just four runs. The seventh inning proved to be the most pivotal as Prada and Jenkins hit back-to-back home runs to extend the Yellow Jackets lead to four runs before adding a single run in the eighth for a 15-10 lead after seven and one-half innings.
UNC and Georgia Tech used a combined 13 pitchers in the game with seven relievers coming out of the Tar Heel bullpen. Zach Maxwell (3-0) earned the win, holding Carolina to two runs on three hits with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Kyle Mott (6-2) was charged with the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.
NOTABLES
• The 27 runs are most combined runs in a game in series history. The two teams combined for 26 runs (UNC 20, GT 6) on April 8, 1980.
• Madej hits his first home run as a Tar Heel. It was his first home run in 126 career at-bats in a Carolina uniform. Madej also collected a career-high three RBIs.
• Zarate homered for the first time since his first at-bat of the season, a span of 138 at-bats between home runs. He batted leadoff for the first time since the fourth game of the season (Feb. 22 vs. Elon).
• Mac Horvath posted the first four-hit game of his career and homered for the third consecutive game. He batted in the No. 2 position for the first time this season.
• Shawn Rapp matched his season-high for innings pitched with 2.1. He also tossed 2.1 innings in the series finale against Virginia Tech.
