Softball Drops ACC Opener To Virginia Tech

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team dropped its ACC opener to No. 11 Virginia Tech, 4-1, on Friday evening in Anderson Stadium.
All five of the runs scored between the two squads were driven home by four home runs, three from the nation-leading home run hitting Hokies.
Abby Settlemyre tallied the Tar Heels' only RBI, hitting her fourth home run of the season, tying Kiersten Licea for most on the team.
Settlemyre and Alex Brown each accounted for two of Carolina's six hits, while Carsyn Snead singled and Destiny Middleton tallied her second double of the season. The Tar Heels were outhit just 7-6 on the night.
In the circle, Bailey McCachren (3-3), threw six innings, her longest outing since Feb. 18 vs. Maryland, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
Talia Hannappel worked a scoreless inning in the seventh, allowing no hits.
It was a defensive and pitching battle through the first three innings, but Virginia Tech got on the board first in the top of the fourth, hitting a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead.
Settlemyre evened it up with a leadoff home run in the home side of the fourth it tie it up at 1 all. The game remained tied until Virginia Tech hit another solo home run in the sixth to go up 2-1, before making it 4-1 in the top of the seventh with a two-run shot.
The Tar Heels fall to 8-14 (0-1 ACC) on the season while the Hokies improve to (18-4, 4-0 ACC).
The teams will rematch tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
