February 26, 2023 | Softball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Carolina softball was shutout 2-0 by FAU in the team's final game of the weekend at the Joan Joyce Classic.
Carolina is now 6-9 on the season after going 0-5 in the tournament, while FAU improves to 9-6.
It was a slow day at the plate for both teams, each combining for just four hits in the game. Abby Settlemyre had two of Carolina's hits, including her third double of the season.
Alex Brown and Destiny Middleton accounted for the other two Tar Heel hits.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. The Owls opened the inning with back-to-back hits to plate the first run, before making it 2-0 with an RBI double.
Carolina was able to get two on-base in the top of the fifth, starting with a single from Brown followed by Middleton reaching on a fielding error, but couldn't convert the offense into any runs.
The Tar Heels were able to get a hit in both the sixth and seventh innings but were ultimately shutout, falling to FAU in back-to-back games.
Kenna Raye Dark (1-2), who started the game, took the loss in the circle, allowing both earned runs in three innings with two strikeouts.
Lilli Backes pitched the remaining three innings, shutting out the Owls with a pair of strikeouts.
Up next, the Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill to host Winthrop on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Anderson Stadium.
