Heels Take Series At NC State; Split Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina rallied for a 7-6 victory over host NC State in game two of a doubleheader at Doak Field on Sunday to earn its first series win over the Wolfpack since 2018. NC State took game one on Sunday, 9-2.
With the victory, the Diamond Heels improved to 27-18 overall and 10-14 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack fell to 30-15 and 12-11 in the conference.
In the first game, Wolfpack sophomore Matt Willadsen struck out nine in a complete game effort, holding North Carolina to five hits. The Diamond Heels put up the first run of the game, but NC State scored nine unanswered and registered 17 total hits.
Game two featured four lead changes with Alberto Osuna's two-run home run in the eighth inning putting the Diamond Heels for good. Carolina racked up 11 hits with five players earning two hits; the only player with just one hit was Osuna. Vance Honeycutt went 2-of-3 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.
The relief pitching trio of Gage Gillian, Connor Bovair and Davis Palermo held NC State to two runs and five hits in the final 7.1 innings after the Pack collected four runs on four hits in the first 1.1 innings. Bovair (5-3) earned the win in three innings of work and Palermo picked up the save, striking out the side in the ninth inning after issuing a leadoff walk.
UNC junior Danny Serretti collected five total hits in the two games, going 3-for-4 in the opener and 2-for-5 in game two. He also drove in a pair of runs and scored two runs.
GAME ONE - NOTABLES
• Danny Serretti became the 10th player in school history to record 50 career doubles with a two-base hit in the eighth inning. He also extended his career-long hitting streak to 18 games with a first inning single. He also recorded his team-best fifth three-hit game of the season.
• UNC starting pitcher Brandon Schaeffer threw a career-high 98 pitches.
• Sophomore Caleb Cozart made his first appearance since April 15 against Georgia Tech.
• Carolina was held to its fewest hits since being limited to five hits against VMI on March 15, 2022.
GAME ONE - HOW IT HAPPENED
• After drawing a one out walk, Horvath stole second and moved to third base on a passed ball before scoring on an infield hit by Danny Serretti in the first (UNC 1, NCSU 0).
• Tommy White hit a two out, solo home run in the bottom half of the first (UNC 1, NCSU 1).
• LuJames Groover scored a wild pitch in the bottom of the third (NCSU 2, UNC 1).
• Groover drove in Jacob Godman with double to right field and Devonte Brown scored on a single by Josh Hood in the bottom of the fourth (NCSU 4, UNC 1).
• Hood hit a two-run homer over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning (NCSU 6, UNC 1).
• NC State scored three runs in the seventh, two on a home run by Jacob Cozart and the third on a ground out by White (NCSU 9, UNC 1).
• Horvath scored on a double by Serretti in the top of the eighth (NCSU 9, UNC 2).
GAME TWO - NOTABLES
• Honeycutt batted cleanup for the first time in his career.
• Serretti extended his career-long hitting streak to 19 games with a first inning double, moving into a tie for ninth on the school's career chart (51).
• Sophomore Hunter Stokely laced his first career triple in the top of the first inning.
• Carolina has won three of its last four games against the Wolfpack.
• The Diamond Heels have won each of the last two series in Raleigh (2018, 2022).
GAME TWO - HOW IT HAPPENED
• Honeycutt hit a two-run home run with one out in the top of the first (UNC 2, NCSU 0).
• Brown and Groover hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the bottom of the first (UNC 2, NCSU 2).
• Payton Green hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second (NCSU 4, UNC 2).
• Honeycutt drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the third followed by an RBI-double from Stokely (UNC 4, NCSU 4).
• Mikey Madej reached on a two-out fielding error that allowed Honeycutt to score from third base in the sixth (UNC 5, NCSU 4).
• Cozart singles to right to drive in a pair of runs for NC State in the bottom of the sixth (NCSU 6, UNC 5).
• Osuna hit a two-run home run with one out in the eighth (UNC 7, NCSU 6).

The Diamond Heels return to Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday, May 10, to face Gardner-Webb. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
