Diamond Heels Complete FSU Series Sweep
May 21, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina baseball team recognized its 11 graduates prior to the game on Saturday and then honored them by finishing off its three-game sweep of No. 20 Florida State, blanking the Seminoles 11-0 Saturday at Boshamer Stadium.
North Carolina finished the regular season with an overall record of 34-19 and 15-15 in the ACC. The Heels have won 11 of 13 since getting swept at Virginia in mid-April with three consecutive conference series triumphs.
With the victory, UNC earned the No. 8 seed in the upcoming ACC Championship in Charlotte next week and will be in Pool A along with No. 1 seed Virginia Tech and No. 12 seed Clemson.
"This group is in a good place right now," UNC Head Coach Scott Forbes said. "We hope to continue the momentum, but they're extremely confident in themselves right now.
"You look at how everybody has raised their level of play; guys are driving the ball, hitting the ball out of the park and guys are throwing better than they did in that tough stretch and that's what it's taken."
Among those 11 graduates recognized prior to the game was outfielder Angel Zarate, who set the tone on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff home run. That proved to be all the run support UNC needed as six pitchers combined on six-hit shutout.
A trio of sacrifice flies and a two-run single accounted for the next five runs and Carolina led 6-0 after six innings.
The game was then stopped in the middle of the seventh and delayed for 2:37 by weather.
Once play resumed, Carolina put up a five-spot with Mac Horvath and Vance Honeycutt each hitting a two-run home run. Zarate's single plated the other run of the inning.
Horvath finished the game three RBIs, while Zarate, Honeycutt and Alberto Osuna had two apiece.
Gage Gillian, Caden O'Brien and Connor Ollio, each of whom were recognized prior to the game, tossed the final two innings.
Fellow graduate Nik Pry (2-0) picked up the win, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts after starter and graduate Will Sandy went 3.0 innings.
Florida State starter Bryce Hubbart (8-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on two hits with three walks and two hit batters.
The Seminoles suffered their fourth straight defeat and dropped to 32-22 overall and 15-15 in the conference.
