Osuna's Walk-Off Homer Pushes Heels Past Florida State
May 19, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – Alberto Osuna hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift North Carolina to a 7-5 win over No. 20 Florida State on Thursday, giving the Tar Heels their ninth win in their last 11 games.
Osuna, who also hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first, smashed the first walk-off home run of his career when he drove a slider from Seminole reliever Wyatt Crowell (5-1) over the left field wall with two outs.
"In my first at bat he threw three straight [sliders], so I want to say I was sitting on, but you still have to respect the fastball," Osuna said. "I was looking for something up, then I saw it and thankfully put a good swing on it."
Osuna's 383-foot blast came after Danny Serretti singled with one out and Johnny Castagnozzi drew a two out walk.
"The one thing about Alberto, to me coaching third base, is that he always looks like he wants to be in that moment," Tar Heel head coach Scott Forbes said. "Some hitters have to learn to want to be in that moment."
Carolina racked up 11 hits led by three from Serretti and two apiece from Osuna and Mikey Madej.
Sophomore reliever Davis Palermo (2-1) picked up the win for the UNC (32-19, 13-15 ACC), after surrendering a two-run home run to James Tibbs in the top of the eighth inning that put FSU (32-20, 15-13) ahead 5-4.
Carolina scored four runs in the first inning on the strength of Osuna's first three-run home run and held the lead until the eighth.
The Seminoles scored two runs in the fourth and added another in the sixth on a solo home run by Jamie Ferrer to make it a one run game.
