Diamond Heels Roll Over Bulldogs
May 10, 2022 | Baseball
Angel Zarate hit a leadoff home run and Mac Horvath crushed a grand slam for the Diamond Heels (28-18), who have won four of five since the exam break. UNC racked up 15 hits and 11 RBIs to improve to 18-1 at home this season against non-conference opponents.
"We're at the point of the season where our guys know that we need to be playing every game like it's the postseason," UNC Head Coach Scott Forbes said. "We came out ready to play, we had good at bats all night and the top four in the lineup were really, really good."
Zarate, Horvath, Danny Serretti and Honeycutt combined for 10 hits, nine RBIs, eight runs, three home runs, two doubles and a triple.
Carolina scored in six of the first seven innings highlighted by a five-run fourth inning that included Horvath's monster slam and an RBI-triple from Honeycutt, which followed his solo home run in the third inning.
UNC led 8-0 after four innings and 11-3 after six.
Sophomore Shawn Rapp made his second start of the season and pitched a season-high 4.2 innings, striking out four. Senior Caden O'Brien (2-0) took the mound in the sixth and struck out four in 2.0 innings pitched to earn the win. Will Sandy and Alden Segui pitched one inning of relief each with Sandy striking out two and Segui three.
"I thought [O'Brien] looked really good and we need him," Forbes said. "I also thought Will Sandy looked good.
"Those two lefties looked good and we're going to need some help down the stretch for a shot to make a run."
Jacob Marcos, Alec Burns and Curtis Robison each got a pair of hits, combining for six of the Runnin' Bulldogs' (17-32) 10 hits.
