LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville third baseman Ben Metzinger hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning and give the 12th-ranked Cardinals a 9-8 victory over No. 22 North Carolina at Jim Patterson Field on Saturday.
The Diamond Heels (21-10, 7-7 ACC) scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and pitcher Caden O'Brien pitched a hitless bottom half to send the game into extra innings.
Johnny Castagnozzi led off the ninth with a double and Danny Serretti followed by drawing a walk before Alberto Osun came to the plate with two outs. Osuna lifted a fly ball into deep right field, but Isaac Humphrey dropped the ball allowing both runners to score, tying the game.
Louisville (22-8, 8-3) led 7-3 after six innings, but Serretti crushed a three-run home run to right field in the top of the seventh to make it a one run game. The Cards then got one run back in the bottom half of the inning.
Serretti finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Carolina got out to a 2-0 lead behind Osuna's two-run homer in the second inning, his third of the series and 10th of the season.
The Cardinals then scored five times in the fourth inning, with Dalton Rushing leading off with a solo home run and Ben Bianco hitting a grand slam.
Michael Prosecky (2-0) picked up the win for UofL, striking out a pair of Heels without allowing an earned run in 3.1 innings pitched. Davis Palermo (1-1) took the loss, facing one batter.
