
Heels Pound Out 17 Hits In Win Over UofL

The Diamond Heels (21-9, 7-6 ACC) pounded out a season-high 17 hits with five players collecting multiple hits. Hunter Stokely record the first four-hit game of his career, while Johnny Castagnozzi, Tomas Frick and Danny Serretti had two hits apiece.
Carolina scored 13 runs across the first five innings highlighted by a five-run first inning. The first three batters all reached and scored before Osuna blasted a two-run home run to cap the frame.
UNC added another run in the second inning and three more in the third and fourth innings. Osuna smashed a two-run double off the top of the left-center field wall in the third before blasting a two-run homer in the fourth.
Louisville (21-8, 7-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning with three coming in on Cameron Masterman's home run. The Cardinals added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with the first two runs coming home off back-to-back home runs Dalton Rushing and Jack Payton to cut the Heels' lead to four after eight innings.
However, Davis Palermo retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the Heels series opening win.
Kyle Mott (6-1) earned the win in relief, striking out three in 2.2 innings pitched, while Tae Kuehner (4-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs in 2.0 innings of work.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday, April 9, at 1 p.m.
NOTABLES
- The Diamond Heels won their fifth straight game over the Cardinals and now lead the all-time series, 9-5.
- UNC snapped a four-game losing streak away from Boshamer Stadium and improved to 3-7 outside of Chapel Hill.
- Carolina scored in each of the first five innings for the second time this season (Feb. 19 vs. Seton Hall). It was the most runs they've scored in the first five innings this year.
- Seven of the nine batters in the lineup got at least one hit.
- North Carolina batters only struck out three times
- Osuna hit two home runs a game for the second time this season (2 at Duke, March 18).
- Mac Horvath collected two doubles in a game for the first time in his UNC career.
- Vance Honeycutt became the first UNC freshman since 2000 to swipe 20 bases in a season. He is 20-of-22 in stolen base attempts this season.
- Max Carlson made his eighth start of the year and threw a season-high 94 pitches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Zarate and Castagnozzi hit back-to-back RBI-doubles in the top of the first inning, Frick lifted a sacrifice fly and Osuna blasted a two-run home run (UNC 5, UL 0).
- Honeycutt tripled to lead off the second inning and then scored on a ground out to second by Zarate (UNC 6, UL 0).
- Osuna doubled off the top of the left field wall to plate Horvath and Frick in the top of the third. Stokley followed with a single up the middle to score Osuna (UNC 8, UL 4).
- Ben Bianco hit a solo home run and Cameron Masterman hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning (UNC 8, UL 4).
- Horvath smacked an RBI-double in the top of the fourth to score Serretti and Osuna followed Horvath with his second home run of the game. (UNC 12, UL 4).
- Serretti singled through the right side to score Honeycutt in the top of the fifth (UNC 13, UL 4).
- Masterman looped a one-out single into center field in the bottom of the fifth to plate Christian Knapczyk (UNC 13, UL 5).
- Dalton Rushing and Jack Payton hit back-to-back home runs to start the scoring in the eighth. Bianco drove in a run with single to right field and Ben Metzinger knocked in the fourth run of the inning on a ground out (UNC 13, UL 9).
Carolina and Louisville will continue their series Saturday, April 9, at 1 p.m.
