Baseball Drops 14 Inning Affair At UM
March 27, 2022 | Baseball
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Renzo Gonzalez hit walk-off single in bottom of the 14th inning to give Miami a 3-2 victory and a series sweep over No. 13 North Carolina at Mark Light Field on Sunday.
The Diamond Heels drop to 18-6 overall and 5-4 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes improved to 17-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
With one on and one out in the bottom of the 14th, UNC intentionally walked Dominic Pitelli to put runners at first and second base. Gaby Gutierrez, who drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth, singled off the glove of pitcher Nik Pry to load the bases, setting the stage for Gonzalez.
Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 behind a two-run base hit from Hunter Stokley in the bottom of the fourth and held that advantage until the bottom of the sixth inning behind starting pitcher Max Carlson.
Carlson cruised through five innings of work, striking out a career-high 11 batters and yielding two hits. He was lifted in the bottom of the sixth after the first two hitters reached base.
Shawn Rapp forced CJ Kayfus into a ground out to get the first out but then hit the next batter to load the bases. Zach Levenson, who singled to start the frame, scored on a ground out to first base to make it a 2-1 game.
Diamond Heel hurlers turned back multiple Hurricane threats until the ninth inning, when Jacob Burke scored after leading off the inning with a walk on Guiterrez's two-out base hit.
Miami pitchers held Carolina to just two hits over the final 10 innings, while the Diamond Heels scattered eight hits throughout the entire game and didn't surrender more than one hit in any inning until the 14th.
Gage Gillian (1-1) suffered the loss and Anthony Arguelles (1-1) claimed the win.
