Horvath Ignites Rally Against App State
March 22, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – Mac Horvath delivered a one-out RBI-double in the bottom of the eighth inning to score the game-winning run and propel No. 13 North Carolina to a 4-2 win over Appalachian State at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday.
The Diamond Heels improved to 18-3 overall this season and the Mountaineers fell to 7-12.
With the game tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Diamond Heels got two runs in the frame and Caden O'Brien struck out the side in the ninth to close out the victory.
Danny Serretti drew a one-walk to start the Diamond Heels' eighth inning rally and then scored on Horvath's double off the wall. Hunter Stokely was then intentionally walked.
On the third strike pitch to Alberto Osuna, Stokely got caught in a rundown trying to steal second base with Horvath at third base. Horvath took advantage of the pickle and swiped home to give UNC a two-run lead.
Carolina amassed seven hits with Max Riemer, who made his first start of the season at catcher, collecting two of those. Riemer was one of three Diamond Heels with an RBI joining Horvath and Angel Zarate.
UNC used seven pitchers to get the victory with O'Brien (1-0) earning his first win of the season. Eli Ellington (1-2) suffered the loss.
