Frick's Slam Highights Win Over Longwood

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina used an eighth-run sixth inning, highlighted by a Tomas Frick grand slam, to run away from Longwood, 16-1, at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday. The No. 24 Diamond Heels pounded out 14 hits, including four doubles, two home runs and a triple.
Alberto Osuna, Danny Serretti and Angel Zarate each collected two hits apiece to lead the attack, but it was Frick's home run that did the most damage. Frick drove in four with one swing of the bat while Zarate, Vance Honeycutt, and Hunter Stokely each drove in a pair of runs.
Honeycutt scored all the runs the Heels needed in the first three innings. He homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning and then scored on a one-out double by Zarate after stealing second base in the third inning.
Carolina (7-1) led 3-0 after four innings and 4-1 after five innings before breaking the game open in the sixth.
Max Riemer and Colby Wilkerson came off the bench to drive in runs as part of the Tar Heels' four-run eighth inning.
Kyle Mott picked up the win out of the bullpen, retiring all four batters he faced, after Connor Bovair went 4.2 innings in his first start as a Tar Heel. Connor Ollio and Caleb Cozart pitched one inning apiece while Tanner Quick and Carson Starnes combined to pitch the ninth inning.
NOTABLES
- Honeycutt led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run for the second time in four games. He also led off with a homer against East Carolina on Friday. He also swiped his eighth consecutive stolen base to start the season.
- Zarate extended his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 31 games.
- Frick's home run was his first home run of the season and first since April 12, 2021, against Duke. The last time the Tar Heels hit a grand slam it was Mac Horvath driving in four runs with one swing against NC State in the ACC Tournament last year.
- Stokely collected a career-high two RBIs with a two-run base hit in the sixth inning.
- Will Stewart made his first start of the season in right field and finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
- Pitchers Tanner Quick and Carson Starnes made their season debuts.
- The Diamond Heels have scored double digit runs in three of their first seven games and have outscored their opponents 70-17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Honeycutt homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning to put UNC up 1-0.
- Honeycutt drew a one-out walk to start the third inning and immediately stole second base before scoring on Zarate's double to left field (UNC 2, LU 0).
- Stewart drove in Horvath with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning (UNC 3, LU 0).
- Longwood designated hitter Elliot Dix drew a leadoff walk to start the fifth and reached third base courtesy of a ground out and wild pitch before scoring on a Michael Peterson single (UNC 3, LU 1).
- Zarate scored on a balk after a leadoff single and two failed pickoff attempts that allowed him to advance to third base (UNC 4, LU 1).
- Honeycutt and Zarate drew consecutive bases loaded walks before Frick's grand slam cleared the base paths. Stokely drove in a pair of runs with a two-out base hit (UNC 12, LU 1).
- Tyler Causey drove in the first run of the eighth with a ground ball out to first base. Riemer then singled to right field to score two more runs before Wilkerson plated Riemer with a base hit.
UP NEXT
The Diamond Heels will be back on the field Wednesday, March 2, against Winthrop. The first pitch is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
