Carolina Posts 4-1 Win Over GW
September 19, 2017 | Men's Soccer
CARY, North Carolina - No. 7 North Carolina won its fifth match in a row after recording a 4-1 victory over George Washington on Tuesday night from WakeMed Soccer Park.Â
Senior Alan Winn scored two goals for North Carolina (7-1) and Zach Wright handout out three assists in the victory.Â
The Tar Heels enjoyed a majority of the possession over the first 20 minutes of play, but had very little to show for it as neither team was able to muster a shot in the early going of this non-conference tilt.Â
Wright took the match into his own hands with a pair of impressive assists in a span of three minutes, 29 seconds. His first delivery found a wide open David October at the top of the 18 and the Cambridge, England, product took it first time to give UNC a 1-0 lead at the 19:27 mark.Â
Wright again maneuvered around the GW defense from the right flank and slipped a ball to Winn for a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
Winn did it again in the 44th minute to make it 3-0 in favor of the Tar Heels. Colonials' keeper Thor Arne Hofs was pressured by Jelani Pieters and made a poor clearing attempt that was easily picked off by Winn and he calmly hit the back of the net at the 43:41 mark. The goal was the sixth in five games for Winn, who on Monday was named the National Player of the Week by College Soccer News after scoring three times in a pair of wins last week.
George Washington (2-4-1) got on the scoreboard four seconds later with a miraculous, half-field kick from reserve Koby Osei-Wusu that made it 3-1 heading into halftime.Â
Wright was determined to get that three-goal margin back for the Tar Heels, and he did just that when he found Jeremy Kelly for a 52nd minute strike that resulted in a 4-1 edge over the Colonials. Wright's third assist established a new single-game high for the senior forward from Smithville, Texas.
Carolina now turns its attention to Friday night's ACC match with No. 9 Virginia that will televised on Fox Sports Carolinas beginning at 7 p.m., from Charlottesville, Va.Â
