Tar Heels Cap Norfolk Training Camp With ODU Scrimmage
August 18, 2017 | Field Hockey
The UNC field hockey team wrapped up Phase 1 of its preseason training on Thursday, scrimmaging against Old Dominion at the Monarchs' L.R. Hill Sports Complex before heading back to Chapel Hill following a week of training in Norfolk, Va.
Â
"It was good to have a chance to play someone else this early in season," UNC coach Karen Shelton said after the scrimmage. "Both teams played hard. It was nice for us to get to see a lot of new faces out there, and I was pleased with depth we were able to show.
"We're still getting to know each other and working on fundamentals. We have a lot of little things to iron out but I was pleased with our first scrimmage."
Â
The Tar Heels are without a home stadium this year as a new one is constructed, so Shelton made the decision to take preseason camp on the road. Carolina will play and practice this fall at Duke's facility in Durham, but the preseason would have presented extra challenges with both teams trying to get in two-a-days. So UNC set off for the beach last Friday and practiced all week at Norfolk Academy. In between, there were team dinners, visits with alums and a squad talent show, which was won by the duo of junior defender Morgan Goetz (guitar) and sophomore goalkeeper Alex Halpin (vocals).
Â
"It was a fun week," Shelton said. "We're still coming together as a group. We have a lot of new faces and it's going to take some time to put combinations together but it's certainly a good start for us. The preseason has been as successful as it could have been."
Â
Following an off day on Friday, the Tar Heels will scrimmage again on Saturday and Sunday.
Â
Saturday's scrimmage is at Duke and begins at 11 a.m. at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Â
Sunday's action is in Charlotte, where the Tar Heels will hold a Blue-White scrimmage at Queens University. Game time is 3 p.m.
