Sprague Finishes Sixth In 400-Meter Freestyle At U.S. Open

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.--The third day of U.S. Open competition at the 2008 U.S. Open at the University of Minnesota's Aquatics Center was highlighted for the University of North Carolina by a Top 6 finish from senior mainstay Whitney Sprague of Bronxville, N.Y. Only two Tar Heels were in action Thursday but Carolina has 16 entries ahead during the Friday and Saturday sessions of the meet. Sprague took sixth place in the 400-meter freestyle in the second fastest time of her career at 4:15.23. Her career best was a school record 4:13.63 at the Charlotte UltraSwim in June. Sprague was the No. 5 qualifier in prelims at 4:15.65. Joe Kinderwater, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., took 32nd place in the men's 400-meter freestyle at 4:01.67 in the only other swim of the day for the Tar Heels.
