Walker Hume and Colton Storm will see their first professional action after being selected in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Hume was a second round pick by FC Dallas, while Storm was selected in the first round by Sporting KC. The two defenders were critical pieces to a Tar Heels’ club that reached the College Cup last fall.
NEW FACES IN NEW PLACES
After 169 appearances in five and a half years with the New York Red Bulls and captained the club to the Supporters’ Shield in 2015, All-Star midfielder Dax McCarty was traded to the Chicago Fire on Jan. 16. The trade took McCarty completely by surprise, with the move being announced just days after the 29-year-old was married and while attending his first US national team camp in years.
McCarty joins two other former Tar Heels players - second-year defender Jonathan Campbell and veteran Michael Harrington.
Zach Loyd was selected by Atlanta United FC with the third pick in the MLS Expansion Draft on Dec. 13, 2016. He was the longest tenured player on the FC Dallas’ roster upon the move to Atlanta. Drafted fifth overall in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, Loyd appeared in 180 matches (third in FCD history) with four goals and eight assists.
Sheanon Williams was acquired by Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Dec. 13, 2016 after spending portions of two seasons with Houston Dynamo. Williams, 26, appeared in 36 games for the Dynamo since being acquired in a July 2015 trade.
