Tar Heels Wrap Up Kitty Harrison Invite
Release: 11/11/2012

CHAPEL HILL --- Tessa Lyons defeated Duke's Annie Mulholland, 7-6 (4), 6-3, to take third place in the singles Blue Draw to cap the final day of play at the 2012 Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Lauren McHale, who teamed with Lyons to take Saturday's doubles Blue Draw title, fell in the singles final to Duke's Mary Clayton, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-5.

Laura Slater finished fourth in the singles White Draw, falling to William & Mary's Anik Cepeda in a third-set tiebreak, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8).

Lyons and Mulholland were tight throughout the first set and it took a tiebreak to separate them. Lyons took the first three points of the breaker and led 4-2 at the first changeover. Mulholland would get no closer, and Lyons took the tiebreak and the first set, 7-6 (4).

The Wallingford, Pa., sophomore raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set before Mulholland took the next three to even the set. Lyons then held to stay ahead, 4-3, and took the final two games to complete the straight-set victory.

On court one, McHale and Clayton were even for much of the match. McHale rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the opening set to win the final three games to take the set, 7-5.

Clayton, the No. 44 player in the country, took a 5-2 lead in the second set before McHale ran off four straight to take a 6-5 lead. Serving for the match, McHale was unable to hold and Clayton forced a tiebreak, which she won, 7-2.

After trailing 2-0 early in the third, McHale won three straight games to get back on serve. After trading breaks, Clayton held for 4-all and McHale held to push it to 5-4. The Duke senior stayed alive with a hold and then took the final two games for the three-set victory that took nearly three hours.

The Kitty Harrison Invitational concludes the fall season for the Tar Heels, who will return to the court in January for the Freeman Memorial in Las Vegas, Nev., and the NCTC Invitational in Palm Springs, Calif.
