LOS ANGELES --- Sophomore Caroline Price and freshman Whitney Kay won three matches Saturday and Sunday to earn one of four spots in the qualifying doubles draw of the 2012 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The duo topped UCLA's Kyle McPhillips and Chanelle Van Nguyen, 8-6, Sunday at the L.A. Tennis Center to advance to the qualifiers.
Price and Kay opened the event with an 8-2 victory over UCLA's Holly Fleming and Morgan Thomas on Saturday before taking care of Wyoming's Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova, 8-2, on Sunday morning.
With the three wins, the Carolina pair will have a chance to win three more matches and advance to the main draw of the event. Qualifying draw play begins Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Lauren McHale and Zoe De Bruycker were also in the prequalifying event, and the senior duo finished 1-1. The Tar Heel tandem defeated third-seeded Shelby Talcott and Ruth Seaborne of Iowa, 8-3, before falling to Auburn's Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifler, 8-2.
Both Price and De Bruycker will compete in the singles qualifying draw that begins Tuesday, while Kay earned an automatic spot in the main draw by virtue of her win in the USTA/ITA Summer Circuit final. McHale will also compete in the main draw as an at-large selection.
Price and Kay will open the doubles qualifiers against fifth-seeded Aleksandra Josifoska and Nives Pavlovic of UNLV. In singles, De Bruycker is the top seed in qualifying and will face Florida State's Francesca Segarelli in the first round. Price opens with seventh-seeded Ludmila Vasilieva of Washington State.
