WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Zoe De Bruycker's run to the USTA/ITA Carolina Region final ended Monday morning with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Duke's Hanna Mar at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. De Bruycker finishes the event with a 5-1 record that included four straight-set wins as well as a three-setter over No. 83 Beatrice Gumulya of Clemson.
After dropping the first set, De Bruycker got an early break in the second only to see Mar get back on serve quickly. Serving down 3-4, De Bruycker was unable to hold and Mar served out the match to take the singles title.
De Bruycker's appearance in the final highlighted a standout tournament for the Tar Heels, one that saw them place six singles players in the final 16 and four in the final eight, as well as two doubles teams in the final four.
Carolina will now await word on potential at-large and wild card selections to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships to be held Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. That is also the weekend of the annual Kitty Harrison Invitational at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
