WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The North Carolina women's tennis team was a perfect 13-0 Friday on the first day of main draw play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
Carolina sent all seven of its singles players into the second round and three doubles teams into the quarterfinals, as the Tar Heels did not drop a set.
In doubles, Zoe De Bruycker and Laura Slater opened the day by knocking off No. 5-8 seed Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead of UNC Greensboro, 8-3. The duo then advanced to the final eight with an 8-4 victory over UNC Wilmington's Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales.
The second-seeded tandem of Ashely Dai and Whitney Kay completed the doubles sweep with wins over Gardner-Webb's Ronia Hutterli and Erica White, 8-4, and South Carolina's Josefin Andersson and Katarina Popova, 8-6.
On the singles side, Dai had the upset of the day with her 6-4, 6-2 victory over top-seeded Joelle Kissell of NC State. The Temple City, Calif., freshman will face East Carolina's Nicole Laduca in Saturday's round of 32.
McHale, the No. 2 seed, advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over NC State's Rachael James-Baker. No. 4-seeded De Bruycker rallied from an early deficit to South Carolina State's Maria Craciun to win, 7-6 (0), 6-2.
Kay, a No. 5-8 seed, topped Furman's Alex Moreno-Kaste, 6-3, 7-6 (0), while No. 9-16 seed Caroline Price beat UNCW's Alyssa Ritchie, 6-2, 6-3. Lyons, also a No. 9-16 seed, bested South Carolina's Andersson, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Laura Slater, UNC's other non-seeded player, advanced in especially impressive fashion, sweeping Charlotte's Anna Ekelund, 6-0, 6-0.
