IOWA CITY, Iowa - North Carolina assistant wrestling coach Cary Kolat will vie for a spot on the United States Olympic Wrestling Team this weekend as he takes part in the Olympic Trials in Iowa City, Iowa. The trials are set for April 21-22 and will be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com.
Kolat was a two-time national champion at Lock Haven before earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Kolat returned the mat recently in a competitive manner and placed second at the U.S. Open in 2011 before claiming the top spot at the Final Olympic Qualifiers in early April.
Entering the weekend Kolat was the the odds-on favorite to claim the top spot at 66 kg.
Also competing from the North Carolina Regional Training Center is Drew Headlee who will be competing at 60 kg.
