GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina placed a pair of freshman wrestlers on the 2012 All-ACC Academic Team as was announced by Commissioner Johns Swofford Thursday. Alex Utley each earned a spot on the 19-member 2011-12 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a minimum 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Utley went 12-20 in his first season as a Tar Heel, including a 2-3 mark in ACC dual matches. The Homeworth, Ohio native started at 184 pounds the first four duals of the year before making the move down to 174 pounds. Utley placed third at the season-opening Hokie Open for the Tar Heels.
Abbondanza posted a 3-18 record as a freshman having to move up several weight classes due to injuries in the Tar Heel lineup. Abbondanza wrestled at heavyweight for much of the year and came away with a crucial decision over Josh Davis of NC State to provide the difference in Carolina's 20-18 dual victory.
Virginia's Matt Snyder was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
