Women's Sabre Leads UNC At Squad Championships

Five of six North Carolina weapons finished in the top 10 in fencing action Sunday at the U.S. Collegiate Squad Fencing Championships in New York. Women's sabre led the way for UNC, finishing fifth. The Tar Heels were sixth in women's epee and men's sabre, seventh in men's epee, eighth in men's foil and 12th in women's foil.

Representing Carolina in women's sabre were Aislinn Klos, Sara Leung, Gillian Litynski and Gladys Manzur.

The UNC lineup in women's epee was Kacie Albert, Shannon Beamon, Alexandria Mead and Lidea Shahidi.

Tar Heels competing in women's foil were Camilla Powierza, Jenna Rodrigues, Heather Van Wallendael and Wynton Wong.

On the men's side, Daniel Giles, Hayden Haberle, Maxwell Tice-Lewis and Parker Williams fenced epee for UNC.

The men's foil lineup was Harry Adams, Joseph Alter, Ian Kanar and Kevin Nadeau.

Tar Heels competing in men's sabre were Sam Austin, Jonathan Blake, Aaron Pritchard and Nate Wiecha.

Hosted by NYU, the event is in its second year and included a very challenging field. Seven of the nation's top 10 women's teams and eight of the top 10 men's teams competed on Sunday. Princeton swept all three women's weapons. St. John's won men's epee, Notre Dame took men's foil and Penn took men's sabre.
