Tar Heel freshman Gillian Litynski led the way with a fourth-place finish in women's sabre as the North Carolina men's and women's fencing squads competed in NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals Saturday in Easton, Pa. A total of 211 student-athletes from 13 schools fenced in the event at Lafayette College's Kirby Sports Center.

On the Tar Heel men's side, senior Kevin Nadeau was eighth in foil. Sophomore Sam Austin finished 10th in men's sabre and sophomore Hayden Haberle was 12th in men's epee.

Another freshman, Lidea Shahidi, was Carolina's top women's epee competitor, finishing 12th. The top Tar Heel in women's foil was junior Jenna Rodrigues at 26th.

Performance at the Regionals is one of the factors used to determine invitations to the NCAA Championships March 22-25 in Columbus, Ohio. The NCAA field will be announced on Tuesday.
