Soccer America Tabs Dunn Player of Year
Release: 01/15/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.  -  North Carolina junior midfielder Crystal Dunn and junior forward Kealia Ohai were named first-team All-Americas Tuesday by Soccer America Magazine while Dunn captured Soccer America Player of the Year honors from the magazine, the 11th different player to do so.  Altogether, UNC has won 13 Soccer America player of the year awards since it was first awarded in 1985.

2012 NCAA champion North Carolina has swept all five national player of the year awards with Dunn winning the Soccer America honor, the MAC Hermann Trophy, the Soccer News Net College Boot and Honda Sports Award for Soccer.  Senior midfielder Amber Brooks won the Top Drawer Soccer accolade.

Dunn and Ohai were named first-team Soccer America MVPs, the equivalent of the magazine's All-America squads.  North Carolina was the only school in the nation to have two players named to the first team.

Three Tar Heels were accorded honors on Soccer America's All-Freshman Team.  Forward Summer Green and defender Hannah Gardner were named to the first team and midfielder Katie Bowen earned a spot on the second team.  UNC and NCAA runner-up Penn State both had two players named to the first-team All-Freshman squad.

Dunn's golden goal gave Carolina a 2-1 win at BYU in the NCAA quarterfinals and set up fellow Soccer America MVP Kealia Ohai for the golden goal that gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 victory over defending champion Stanford in the semifinals.

Dunn (Rockville Centre N.Y./South Side High School/Albertson Fury), who scored both goals for the Tar Heels in the win over BYU, missed the first part of the season to represent the U.S. at the Under-20 Women's World Cup in Japan. She finished with five goals for UNC, all in NCAA Tournament games.

Dunn, who also won the 2012 Hermann Trophy, played at right back for the USA but was moved to midfield for the Carolina run to its 22nd national championship since 1981.
