Three-year letter winner who started most of her sophomore year in the midfield for Carolina • a strong presence either on the flank or in the center in the midfield • also an excellent student • a Veteran Leader in the Carolina Leadership Academy Program • Academic Team captain of 2013-14 Tar Heels • awarded the AUPHA/McGaw Undergraduate Scholarship Award in the Gillings' School of Global Public Health • has been named to the Dean's List in five semesters.

Junior Season (2012)

Played in all 23 games for the Tar Heels during their 2012 national championship season • named to All-ACC Academic Team • totaled 1,079 minutes played • started games against San Diego, Maryland, Radford and Illinois • had a goal and three assists on the season • recorded assists in wins over San Diego and Virginia Tech • had a goal and an assist in NCAA second round win over Illinois • played a season high 83 minutes in UNC's NCAA third round win over Baylor • named to Dean's List in both semesters of 2012-13 school year • earned distinction on the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the third successive year.

Sophomore Season (2011)

Played in all 20 matches for the Tar Heels • earned 13 starting assignments in the midfield • started the first eight games and last three games of the campaign, primarily when UNC was in a 3-4-3 alignment • scored her first career goal and added an assist in win over Houston • had an excellent NCAA Tournament for the Tar Heels • had a goal and an assist in the first round versus William & Mary • scored the game-winning goal in a 5-0 NCAA second round win over Baylor • totaled 1139 minutes played on the season • named to the 2012 ACC Academic Honor Roll, the fall semester 2011 Dean's List and the 2012 spring semester Dean's List.

Freshman Season (2010)

Played in all 24 games for the Tar Heels • started the last 10 games of the season at right midfield • played 1336 minutes and recorded seven assists, the sixth highest total on the team • recorded three assists versus Missouri on August 29 and had two helpers against Miami on October 17 • assisted on Crystal Dunn's game-winning goal in the 99th minute in a 1-0 win at Virginia • assisted on Meghan Klingenberg's game-tying goal in the 88th minute in the ACC Tournament semifinals versus Wake Forest • named to the 2010-11 ACC Academic Honor Roll • merited Dean's List accolades in spring semester 2010.

ODP & Club Soccer

Played center midfield for the Marin FC in club soccer, leading the squad to the '08 State Cup semifinals • selected in 2009 for the ODP Region IV Team • made the Cal North state ODP team four years straight from 2006-09 • Marin FC captain.

Prep

Graduated from The Branson School in Ross, Calif., on June 11, 2010 • member of varsity soccer team there for four years • led Branson to MCAL high school league championships in 2007 and 2009 • MCAL player of the year in 2010 • a first-team All-League and All-County selection in 2007, 2008 and 2009 • Branson team captain • MVP of Branson School squad in 2008 and 2010 • selected to the Branson cum laude society.

Kelly Heavner McFarlane is the daughter of Marilou and Craig McFarlane • was born October 2, 1992 in San Francisco, Calif. • health policy and management major and chemistry minor • her mother ran cross country at UNC while her dad was a football player at UC Davis • stands 5-8 tall • UNC Hospitals volunteer in the physical therapy department • member of Student-Athlete Advisory Council • her younger sister, Darcy, is a freshman midfielder on the Carolina team.
