Two-year letter winner who started most of last year in the midfield for Carolina • a strong presence on the flank in the midfield • also an excellent student • a Rising Star in the Carolina Leadership Academy Program • enrolled in the prestigious UNC Gillings School of Public Health.

Sophomore Season (2011)

Played in all 20 matches for the Tar Heels • earned 13 starting assignments in the midfield •  started the first eight games and last three games of the campaign, primarily when UNC was in a 3-4-3 alignment • scored her first career goal and added an assist in win over Houston • had an excellent NCAA Tournament for the Tar Heels • had a goal and an assist in the first round versus William & Mary • scored the game-winning goal in a 5-0 NCAA second round win over Baylor • totaled 1139 minutes played on the season • named to the 2012 ACC Academic Honor Roll, the fall semester 2011 Dean's List and the 2012 spring semester Dean's List.

Freshman Season (2010)

Played in all 24 games for the Tar Heels • started the last 10 games of the season at right midfield • played 1336 minutes recorded seven assists, the sixth highest total on the team • recorded three assists versus Missouri on August 29 and had two helpers against Miami on October 17 • assisted on Crystal Dunn's game-winning goal in the 99th minute in a 1-0 win at Virginia • assisted on Meghan Klingenberg's game-tying goal in the 88th minute in the ACC Tournament semifinals versus Wake Forest • named to the 2010-11 ACC Academic Honor Roll • merited Dean's List accolades in spring semester 2010.

ODP, National Teams & Club Soccer

Played center midfield for the Marin FC in club soccer, leading the squad to the '08 State Cup semifinals • selected in 2009 for the ODP Region IV Team • made the Cal-North state ODP team four years straight from 2006-09 • Marin FC captain.


Graduated from The Branson School in Ross, Calif., on June 11, 2010 • member of varsity soccer team there for four years • led Branson to MCAL high school league championships in 2007 & '09 • MCAL player of the year in 2010 • a first-team All-League and All-County selection in 2007, 2008 and 2009 • Branson team captain • MVP of Branson School squad in 2008 and 2010 • selected to the Branson cum laude society.


Kelly Heavner McFarlane is the daughter of Marilou and Craig McFarlane • was born October 2, 1992 in San Francisco, Calif. • health policy and management major • her mother ran cross country at UNC while her dad was a football player at UC Davis.

Section #1:  Soccer

1. The best thing about being a Tar Heel soccer player is playing with such great players.

2. My favorite thing about competing for Coach Dorrance is how he pushes us to be the best.

3. Since last year the aspect of my training I've worked on the most is my technical abilities.

4. My best friend on another college soccer team is Amy Schlueter at Middlebury.

5. My greatest strength as a soccer player is my work rate.

Section #2:  Interests

1. Away from the soccer field and academic pursuits I like to spend time at the beach or camping.

2. The best movie I've seen recently is The Avengers.

3. If I could compete in another sport at UNC it would be lacrosse or basketball

4. The music act I'd most like to see in person is Zac Brown Band.

5. The personal interests I have that might surprise my teammates are river rafting and painting.

Section #3:  Food & Beverage

1. After a game at Fetzer Field, I'd like to see a buffet spread at McCaskill that included pizza, fruit and Gatorade.

2. My favorite beverage is chocolate milk.

3. My favorite food made by a relative is my Mom's apple pie.

4. My favorite place to eat in Chapel Hill is Spanky's.

5. My favorite guilty pleasure food wise is jelly beans.

Section #4:  Personality

1. If I possessed the gift of time travel I'd like to go to the future.

2. My most prized personal possession is my family's black lab, Poppy.

3. My dream job is to join Doctors Without Borders.

4. The most interesting person I've met at UNC is Anson.
