CHAPEL HILL - Head coach Jenny Levy has released the University of North Carolina's 2012 fall schedule, highlighted by three scrimmages against outside competition and a pair of fall tournaments hosted by Navy and Duke. The Tar Heels also will hold their annual alumnae game on Oct. 5 in Chapel Hill.
UNC will host Winthrop (4 p.m.) and Duke (6 p.m.) on Friday Sept. 28 at the Finley Practice Fields in Chapel Hill.
Carolina is scheduled to play a home scrimmage against Virginia Tech (Oct. 6), following the alumnae game on Friday Oct. 5. UNC will travel to Annapolis, Md., for the U.S. Naval Academy's tournament on Oct. 13, then jump up to Baltimore to play a Sunday morning scrimmage at Loyola on Oct. 14. The Tar Heels will close their fall slate at the Duke tournament on Oct. 27.
"The first step to the 2013 season is the fall and building relationships and the overall foundation for the year," says head coach Jenny Levy. "It is a chance to bring on-board our freshmen, work on technique and fundamentals and foster the continual improvement of our returning players."
The Tar Heels must replace their top two scorers from last season in graduated All-Americas Laura Zimmerman and Becky Lynch. Returning offensively are All-Atlantic Coast Conference choices Abbey Friend and Kara Cannizzaro, as well as three of four starting defenders and senior goalkeeper Lauren Maksym.
"We have intentionally used all of our scrimmage dates this fall to give all of our players valuable playing experience and give them an opportunity to demonstrate what they can do on the field," Levy continues. "It is a new year, a new team and we have a new coach on staff. We are excited about this fall and look forward to the hard work that lays ahead."
