CHAPEL HILL - The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee has awarded a $7,500 scholarship to 2011 University of North Carolina graduate and former women's lacrosse player Meredith Newton for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school.  This award adds to the list of impressive academic honors Newton has won during and since her playing career in Chapel Hill.

In 2010, Newton won the NCAA's Elite 88 Award as the player participating in the NCAA Tournament semifinals that season with the highest overall grade point average.  A Phi Beta Kappa student at UNC, she was a mainstay on the Dean's List, the ACC Honor Roll and the All-ACC Academic Team.

Newton also won an Atlantic Coast Conference postgraduate scholarship in 2011.  She has worked doing labratory research to fight cancer and will attend medical school at the University of Virginia beginning this fall.
