CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The 11th-ranked University of North Carolina women's golf team was one of 72 teams to receive a bid to participate in the NCAA Regionals. The Tar Heels will be playing in the NCAA East Regional May 9-11. The 54-hole event will be played at Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala. In addition to the 72 teams, 18 individuals received a bid to play in the three regionals (East, Central and West). The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams will advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
"We are looking forward to participating in the NCAA Regionals and advancing on to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Georgia," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "In preparation for regionals, the team has been practicing and playing while finishing up with classes and studying for final exams. I am very confident in their ability. They will be ready for both the NCAA Regionals and Championships."
Seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams received bids to extend their seasons. Carolina (4 seed) is one of two ACC teams in the East Regional at Auburn. Virginia is the #5 seed. Three conference teams will participate in the Central Regional at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. - Duke is the top seed while NC State (#8 seed) and Wake Forest (#14 seed) will also be in the Central. Two additional teams will play in the West Regional to be played at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. - Florida State (#17 seed) and Miami (#18 seed). In addition, Isabel Southard of Boston College received is one of six individuals to receive an individual bid to play in the East Regional.
Carolina is ranked 11th in Golfstat's Rankings and the Golf World/WGCA Coaches' Poll, and 15th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. The Tar Heels have won three tournaments this year and and carded five top-5 finishes. Carolina captured the team title at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview, the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational and the UCF Challenge, and tied for fifth at the ACC Championships and the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
This marks Carolina's 20th appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Since the regional format was instituted in women's golf in 1993, the Tar Heels have received a bid in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998. 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. All of these appearances were in the East Regional except 2008 (West) and 2012 (West).The complete list of teams participating in the NCAA Eest Regional are as follows (by seed): Alabama, Arkansas, UCLA, North Carolina, Virginia, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Texas, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas State, Auburn, Central Florida, Penn State, East Carolina, Florida International, Mississippi, East Tennessee State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, James Madison, Eastern Kentucky and Alabama State. The individual participants in the East are Natalie Wille of Augusta State, Kelly Shon of Princeton, Casey Kennedy of Augusta State, Isabel Southard of Boston College, Shu-Yin Liu of Tulsa and Kristina Merkle of Tulsa.
