Women Golfers 6th At ACCs

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina ninth-ranked women's golf team fired a 309 in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and is in sixth place with a 617 total.  The Tar Heels were led on Saturday by junior Katherine Perry who fired a 3-over-par 74.

Perry, who hails from Cary, N.C., has a 10-over 152 total and is in 15th place.  She carded three birdies and six bogeys on Saturday.  Elizabeth Mallett, a freshman from Sutton Coldfield, England, shot an 11-over 82 in the second round and is tied for 18th place at 12-over 154.  Junior Casey Grice, from College Station, Texas, fired a 5-over 76  and is tied for 21st at 13-over 155.  Jackie Chang, a junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., carded a 6-over 77 and is tied for 26th with a 156 total while sophomore Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., struggled on Saturday shooting an 89 for a 172 total and is in 43rd place.

Duke leads the field of nine teams with a 17-over 585.  The Blue Devils shot an 8-over 292 in the second round and hold an 11-stroke lead over second-place NC State which stands at 28-over 596 after shooting an 11-over 295 on Saturday.  Virginia is in third place at 32-over 600 while Florida State is fourth at 303, Wake Forest is fifth at 304 and Carolina sixth at 309.   Rounding out the field is Miami in seventh place at 304, Boston College is eighth at 314 and Maryland is ninth at 321.

Virginia's Brittany Altomare retained the lead in the individual race, firing a 1-under 70. Altomare has a 1-under 141 total. Lindy Duncan of Duke moved into second place individually after shooting an even par 71 in the second, pushing her two-day total to a 2-over 144. Virginia's Briana Mao and Miami's Leticia Ras-Anderica are tied for third place. Both shot a 1-over 72 in the second round and have a 4-over 146 two-day total. In a tie for fifth place, Duke's Laetitia Beck and Celine Boutier are one stroke behind at 5-over 147.

The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Sunday at the Sedgefield Country Club which features a par 71, 6,210-yard layout.  Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
