GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina ninth-ranked women's golf team shot a 24-over-par 308 in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Freshman Elizabeth Mallett led the Tar Heels with a 1-over 72, tying for second place individually.
"Conditions were tough today with high winds," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "I would say that the golf course got the better of us today. The team just needs to stay relaxed, play smart, believe in the team's ability and have fun. Tomorrow will be a better day!"
Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, birdied her fourth hole before bogey on three of her next ten holes. A birdie on hole fifteen pushed her back to a 1-over 72 for the round. Katherine Perry, a junior from Cary, N.C., finished with a 7-over 78, tying for 22nd place individually. She recorded five bogeys and a double bogey in the round. Juniors Casey Grice and Jackie Chang each shot an 8-over 79 in the first round. Grice, a College Station, Texas, native, began the round well, shooting an even-par through seven holes. In the remaining nine holes, Grice carded three bogeys, two triple bogeys, and a birdie. Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz, recorded eight bogeys in the opening round. Grice and Chang are tied for 27th in the individual race. Maia Schechter, a sophomore from Takoma Park, Md., had six bogeys, two double bogeys, a triple bogey and a birdie in the first round to finish with a 12-over 83 and tie for 40th individually.
Duke leads the field of nine teams following the first round. The Blue Devils tallied a 9-over 293. Virginia is in second place with a 16-over 300. In third place, N.C. State is one stroke behind Virginia with a 301 total for the round. Florida State is in fourth place at a 22-over 306. The Tar Heels round out the top five with a 308 total.
Brittany Altomare of Virginia fired an even par 71 in the first round to lead the ACC Tournament individually. Mallett, Duke's Alejandra Cangrejo, and N.C. Stat's Augusta James are tied for second place at 1-over 72. Lindy Duncan of Duke rounds out the top five with a 2-over 73.
The event is being played at Sedgefield Country Club, which features a par 71, 6,210-yard layout. The Tar Heels will play the second round Saturday.
