GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team tied for eighth in the SunTrust Gator Invitational. The Tar Heels shot a 17-over-par 297 Sunday to drop them from seventh place after two rounds. Junior Katherine Perry tied for 13th place in the individual race after firing a 2-over 72 for the second day in a row.
Perry, from Cary, N.C., carded four birdies and six bogeys in the final round of play. Perry's 2-over 72 put her three-day total at an 8-over 218 and tied for 13th place. Junior Jackie Chang and sophomore Maia Schechter tied for 20th place at an 11-over 221 after three rounds. However, Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., fired a 3-over 73 and carded two birdies and five bogeys in the round. Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., participated in the tournament as an individual, so her 5-over 75 did not count for the Tar Heels. Casey Grice, a junior from College Station, Texas, had her best round of the tournament, finishing with a 4-over 74 and two birdies in the round. She tied for 38th place with a 16-over 226. Senior Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., tied for 49th after recorded eight bogeys in the final round to finish 8-over on the day and with a 19-over 229 for the tournament. Elizabeth Mallett, a freshman from Sutton Coldfield, England, carded a 13-over 83 in the final round of play to tie for 67th individually at 236.
Alabama held onto first place after firing a 6-over-par 286 to finish with a 25-over 865. Oklahoma was the sole second place finisher with a three-day total of a 28-over 868. Two strokes behind, Florida finished in third place after shooting an 8-over 288 in the final round. Oklahoma State and Virginia tied for fourth place. Both teams finished 37-over-par at 877.
Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma won the individual race. She improved to 4-under-par for the tournament, finishing at 206. Virginia's Portland Rosen placed second individually, five strokes behind Jao-Javanil. Rosen shot a 1-over 71 in the final round. Brittany Altomare of Virginia finished in third place at a 3-over 213 for the tournament. Mississippi State's Ally McDonald and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow tied for fourth place a stroke behind at a 4-over 214. McDonald fired a 1-under 69 in the final round, while Meadow shot a 2-over 72.
The 54-hole event was played at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida which features a par 70, 6,002-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action March 29 at the Bryan National Collegiate at Browns Summit, N.C.
