GAINESVILLE, FLA. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team is in seventh place after the second round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational. The Tar Heels shot a 14-over-par 294 to push their two-day total to a 35-over 595. Junior Katherine Perry continues to lead the Tar Heels after firing a 2-over-par 72 in the second round.
Perry, from Cary, N.C., shot just one birdie and three bogeys to earn a 2-over 72. Perry is tied for 14th place after two rounds at a 6-over 146. Sophomore Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., fired a 3-over 73 for the second day in a row and is tied for 14th place. Because she is competing as an individual, her score cannot count towards the team total. Jackie Chang, a junior from Paradise Valley, Ariz., fired a 2-over 72 to improve to a tie for 21st place with an 8-over-par 148. Chang carded two birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey to finish the day 2-over. Senior Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., recorded three birdies in the round and finished with a 4-over 74. She is tied for 38th place after two rounds with an 11-over 151. Casey Grice, a junior from College Station, Texas, is tied for 43rd place after scoring a 6-over 76 for the second straight round. Grice had two birdies in the round. Elizabeth Mallett, a freshman from Sutton Coldfield, England, carded an 8-over 78 with just one birdie in the round. She stands tied for 48th place after two rounds at a 13-over 153.
Alabama moved into first place after going 13-over-par in the second round. The Crimson Tide push first-day frontrunner Oklahoma into a tie for second place with Florida. Oklahoma State is in fourth place after two rounds. Virginia rounds out the top five after firing a 9-over-par 289.
Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma leads the individual race after two rounds. Jao-Javanil followed up her first round score of a 1-under 69 with a 2-under 68 in the second round. Virginia's Portland Rosen is in second place individually dropping from a tie for first place at an even-par 140. Haley Davis of Baylor fired a 2-under 68 to improve from a tie for 20th place to place third. Virginia's Brittany Altomare and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow are tied for fourth place at 2-over 142 through two rounds. AC Tanguay of Oklahoma is in sixth place at a 3-over 143.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Sunday at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida which features a par 70, 6,002-yard layout. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
