Golfers Tied 10th At Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, FLA. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a 21-over-par 301 total and is tied for 10th place after the first round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational.  The Tar Heel team was led by junior Katherine Perry who fired a 4-over 74 on Friday.

Perry, a junior from Cary, N.C., fired two birdies, four bogeys and one double-bogey en route to her 2-over 74 and is tied for 29th place.  Sophomore Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., fired a 3-over 73, but is competing as an individual so her score cannot count towards the team total.  She stands tied for 20th.  Elizabeth Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, carded a 5-over 75 and is tied for 32nd.  Juniors Casey Grice, from College Station, Texas, and Jackie Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., both carded a 6-over 76 and are tied for 39th place.  Courtney Gunter, a senior from Matthews, N.C., shot a 7-over 77 and is tied for 48th.

Oklahoma leads the field of 15 teams after firing a 5-over-par 285 in the first round.  Alabama is one stroke back in second place at 6-over 286.  Host Florida is third at 289, Miami is fourth at 290 and Oklahoma State and Mississippi State are tied for fifth place with 293 totals. 

Stephanie Meadow of Alabama and Portland Rosen of Virginia are tied in the individual race as both fired a 2-under 68 in the first round.  There is a four-way tie for third place at 1-under 69 - Florida's Camilla Hedberg, Oklahoma State's Josephine Janson and Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil and AC Tanguay.

The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida which features a par 70, 6,002-yard layout.  The Tar Heels begin teeing off at 9 a.m off the #10 tee in Saturday's second round. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
