HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired an 11-over-par 295 in the final round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and finished tied for fifth place with an 889 total. The Tar Heels were led by junior Casey Grice who fired a 1-over-par 72 on Sunday.
"We had played a bit better as a team, but we had some very good individual performances all three days of the tournament," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "Long Cove is a demanding course. It was a good test that showed our strengths and exposed some of the things we need to continue to work on. We are looking forward to our next event at the University of Florida next weekend."
Grice, from College Station, Texas, tied for fifth place at 3-over 216, her fourth top-10 finish this year. Elizabeth Mallett, a freshman from Sutton Coldfield, England, fired a 2-over 73 in the final round to finish tied for 17th at 10-over 223. Senior Courtney Gunter, competing as an individual, tied for 20th at 225. The Matthews, N.C., native shot a 5-over 76 in the final round. Junior Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., carded a 79 and tied for 30th with a 226 total. Jackie Chang, a junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., shot a 3-over 74 on Sunday to tie for 32nd at 14-over 227 while sophomore Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., shot a 76 to finish at 233 in a tie for 51st.
Alabama topped the field of 15 teams finishing at 24-over 876 after firing a 7-over 291 in the final round. LSU and Vanderbilt finished four strokes back in second place at 28-over 880. Arizona State finished fourth at 886 while Arkansas and Carolina tied for fifth at 889 and Virginia finished seventh at 894. Rounding out the top 10 are UCF and Tennessee which tied for eighth at 902 and Georgia placed 10th with a 914 total.
Noemi Jimenez from Arizona State came from three strokes back entering the final round to capture the individual title with a 4-under 209 total. Jimenez fired a 3-under 68 on Sunday while Madelene Sagstrom from LSU, who was the second-round leader, carded a 4-over 75 to finish at even par 213, four strokes behind Jimenez. Stephanie Meadow of Alabama fired a 4-under 67 on Sunday to finish at 1-over 214 in third place and Dani Ordonez of Arizona State finished fourth at 2-over 215 after shooting an even par 71. Carolina's Grice and Vanderbilt's Kendall Martindale tied for fifth place at 3-over 216 while Tennessee's Erica Popson placed seventh at 4-over 217 and Arkansas' Emily Tubert finished eighth place at 5-over 218.The 54-hole event was played at the Long Cove Club which features a par 71, 6,211-yard layout. The Tar Heels continue their spring break travels participating in the SunTrust Gator Invitational March 15-17 in Gainesville, Fla.
