HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired an 11-over-par 295 total and is tied for second place after the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels are just two strokes behind the leader and were led by junior Casey Grice who fired an even par 71 on Friday.
"Long Cove is a demanding course with a very competitive field," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "I thought overall the team did well with course management, but feel there are some improvements we can make in that area. We are looking forward to teeing it up again tomorrow in calmer conditions."
Three Tar Heels are in the top 20 individually. Grice, from College Station, Texas, is tied for second place, just three strokes behind the leader. Grice's even par 71 featured three birdies and three bogeys. Freshman Elizabeth Mallett fired a 2-over-par 73 after posting one birdie and three bogeys. The native of Sutton Coldfield, England, is tied for eighth after Friday's first round. Katherine Perry, a junior from Cary, N.C., posted a 3-over 74 and and is tied for 18th. Junior Jackie Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., and sophomore Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., both carded a 6-over 77 and stand deadlocked in 42nd place. Courtney Gunter is competing as an individual and is tied for 49th place. The Matthews, N.C., native shot a 7-over 78 in the first round.
Arkansas fired a 9-over-par 293 and leads the field of 15 teams. Carolina and LSU are two strokes back in a tie for second place at 11-over 295. Vanderbilt is alone in fifth place at 12-over 296 while three teams are tied for fifth - Alabama, Tennessee and Arizona State. Rounding out the top 10 are UCF in eighth place at 298, Virginia is ninth at 301 and Wake Forest is 10th at 304.
Emma Lavy of Arkansas grabbed the individual lead after firing a 3-under-par 68 in the first round. Carolina's Grice, Arkansas' Gabriela Lopez and LSU's Madelene Sagstrom are three strokes back in a tie for second place at even par 71. Another three players are tied for fifth place at 1-over 72 - Virginia's Brittany Altomare, Arizona State's Noemi Jimenez and Wake Forest's Mariana Sims. Tar Heel Elizabeth Mallett is among 10 players deadlocked in eighth place at 2-over 73.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Long Cove Club which features a par 71, 6,211-yard layout. The Tar Heels begin teeing off at 10 a.m. in Saturday's second round. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
