FRANKLIN, TENN.- The North Carolina women's golf team continued their fall season at the Mason Rudolph Championship and is in 13th place after the first round. Carolina began the event with 22-over-par 310 total. Tar Heel Casey Grice is tied for eighth place in the individual race.
Grice, from College Station, Texas, went into her last four holes 3-over-par, but birdied two of the last four to finish the round 1-over at 73. The junior posted four birdies on the day to keep her in contention for the individual race. After finishing 1-over on the back nine due to two birdies, junior Jackie Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., bogeyed three of her last four holes to end with a 4-over 76 and tie for 28th. Maia Schechter, a sophomore from Takoma Park, Md., recorded par 5 on her last hole after four consecutive bogeys to finish her round with a 7-over 79 in her first team event with Tar Heels in the 2012-2013 season. This score was low enough to count for the overall team score and tie for 54th. Junior Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., birdied her last hole to end 10-over for the day and in 72nd place, after shooting 8-over on the back nine holes. Elizabeth Mallett, playing in the second tournament of her freshman season, finished with a 12-over 84 performance. The Sutton Coldfield, England, product suffered from three double bogeys in the round, dropping her score from those counted for UNC and placing her 77th. Additionally, senior Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., played as an individual in this tournament, so her 7-over 79 score will not count. Gunter began the day 5-over on the back nine and bogeyed two holes her final three holes to end 7-over and tied for 54th place.
The University of Texas took the lead in the first round with a 6-over-par score of 294. The Longhorns are four strokes ahead of the second place finisher, Arizona. Kentucky ended just one stroke behind Arizona with an 11-over 299 for the round.
Virginia's Briana Mao, Michigan State's Caroline Powers and Wake Forest's Olafia Kristinsdottir lead the individual race at 1-under. Four golfers, Ashleigh Albrecht of Kentucky, Lauren Kim of Stanford, and Emilie Burger and Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia, played an even par for the round, earning fourth place standings. Just two strokes behind first place, six players, including Carolina's Casey Grice posted 1-over to finish in eighth place. Texas's Tezira Abe, Desiree Dubreuil, and Katelyn Sepmoree, Arizona's Kenda;; Prince, and Oregon's Cassy Isagawa also recorded 73.
The event continues through Sunday at Vanderbilt Legends Club, a par 72 course with a 6,312-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
