Tar Heels Top Davidson, 70-59

CHAPEL HILL --- Freshman Xylina McDaniel notched a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds in her collegiate debut, as North Carolina defeated Davidson 70-59 on Friday in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT at Carmichael Arena.

McDaniel led all scorers and added four steals to her contributions in her opening minutes as a Tar Heel.

After a back-and-forth game in its opening minutes, the Tar Heels went on a commanding 30-10 run in the middle of the second half to pull away.

UNC scored 56 points in the paint, as center Waltiea Rolle put up a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The senior also added four blocks to the Carolina defensive effort, which held Davidson under 40 percent from the field and forced 27 turnovers.

Tierra Ruffin-Pratt finished the game with 14 points and three assists, while Danielle Butts scored 10 points off the bench. Overall, UNC finished the game shooting 42.1 percent.

North Carolina also pressured the Wildcats on the glass, outrebounding Davidson 47-36. Senior forward Krista Gross contributed 10 of those boards, while also scoring four points and notching a team-high four assists.

Davidson guard Laura Murray led the Wildcats with 16 points, while forward Hannah Early added 10 points off the bench.

McDaniel led North Carolina at the half with eight points and five rebounds, while Rolle chipped in seven points and six rebounds in the game's first 20 minutes.

The Tar Heels strung together an 18-4 run in the final nine minutes of the first period to pull away from Davidson after a previously close game. Carolina went into the break leading the Wildcats by nine, UNC's biggest lead of the first half, on 40.5 percent shooting.

Davidson clawed back to within two points multiple times during the opening minutes of the second half. A 3-pointer from Sophia Aleksandravicius with just under 15 minutes to go in the second half tied the game at 40 before the Tar Heels powered their way to a lead they would not relinquish.

The Preseason WNIT continues with the quarterfinals Sunday, when Carolina will play Duquesne at 5 p.m. UNC will be honoring Veterans Day by admitting all veterans and their families for just $1.
