LONDON - Tar Heel track and field alum Alice Schmidt advanced to the women's 800 meters semifinal at the 2012 Olympics after placing second in her qualifying round heat. Racing the two laps of the track in 2:01.65, the American contender is tied for 11th in the semifinal standings.
Schmidt finished in her heat behind Russia's Mariya Savinova by a mere nine-hundredths of a second. The top time of the morning was run by American Alysia Johnson Montano at 2:00.47.
Schmidt will headline the first heat of the 800 semifinal, running in lane six. The former Tar Heel owns a personal best time of 1:58.61 and season best 1:59.46. The 800 semifinal will take place at 2:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday and can be streamed live here.
