ATLANTA - The North Carolina men's tennis team (8-10, 1-4 ACC) defeated Georgia Tech (8-11, 1-5 ACC) by a score of 5-2 on Friday at Byers Tennis Complex, picking up their first ACC win and snapping an eight-game losing streak in the process.
The Tar Heels were paced by a strong doubles performance, taking the point behind wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Oystein Steiro and Andrew Gores notched the first doubles victory for Carolina by handling Georgia Tech's Colin Edwards and Garrett Gordon at the No. 3 seed, 8-2. Esben Hess-Olesen and Brett Clark went on to secure the doubles point with a 9-7 win at No. 2.
The match at the No. 1 position between Carolina's pairing of Nelson Vick and William Parker and the Yellow Jacket's duo of Juan Spir and Eduardo Segura was halted when the point was clinched, leaving the match tied at 7-7.
The Tar Heels went on to take four of the six singles matches to seal the 5-2 victory.
No. 38 Esben Hess-Olesen kept the positive momentum going for Carolina, claiming a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Juan Melian at the No. 1 seed. Juan Spir countered for Georgia Tech by defeating Nelson Vick at No. 2 singles by a count of 6-3, 7-5. At the No. 3 seed, freshman Brett Clark defeated Nathan Rakitt in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to give the Tar Heels a 3-1 lead.
Oystein Steiro clinched the win for Carolina at the No. 5 position, defeating Georgia Tech's Anish Sharma, 7-5, 6-2.
The teams split the remaining matches, which both went to three sets. At No. 6 singles, Carolina's Stuart DePaolo prevailed against Colin Edwards, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). In the final match of the day, Georgia Tech's Eduardo Segura edged William Parker at No. 4 singles in a remarkably contest, taking it by a score of 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to No. 19 Clemson for an 11 a.m. match.
