CARY, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Tournament after defeating Miami 4-0 in a first-round match Thursday morning.
Coach Sam Paul's Tar Heels cruised to the doubles point and then decisively won three singles matches over the Hurricanes, closing out the match in less than two and a half hours. UNC improved to 12-12 on the campaign while Miami fell to 13-13. It was a beautiful morning for tennis at the Cary Tennis Park with 65 degree temperatures and sunny skies.
The Tar Heels secured a date with second-ranked Virginia, the tournament's #1 seed, in Friday's quarterfinal round at the Cary Tennis Park.
UNC achieved early breaks in doubles on courts two and three. 86th-ranked Brett Clark and Esben Hess-Olesen defeated Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto at the #2 spot 8-4. Oystein Steiro then served out the clinching game at #3 as he and James Coxe triumphed over Marco Stancati and Henrique Tsuakamoto 8-5.
Carolina continued its momentum in singles play, taking four of the five first sets that were completed before the match was called. Brett Clark was the first off the court for the Heels as he earned his 20th overall singles win of his freshman campaign with a double bagel against Gabriel Flores, 6-0, 6-0. Oystein Steiro was almost as efficient as he defeated Victor Mauz 6-2, 6-0 at the #5 spot.
Sophomore Esben Hess-Olesen, ranked 43rd nationally, swept his opponent, Diego Soto, in the first set before clinching the match for the Tar Heels 6-3 in the second.
