CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Esben Hess-Olesen has earned a bid to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division I singles championship.
This marks the fifth successive year that a Tar Heel has earned an invitation to the singles phase of the NCAA Division I Championships. Hess-Olesen's bid is the 19th singles bid earned by the Tar Heels during the coaching tenure of Sam Paul.
The sophomore from Viby, Denmark is ranked 43rd nationally in singles in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association rankings.
Despite missing several matches due to injury in February and March, he finished the season 22-11 overall in singles and 11-7 in dual matches at the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup for the Tar Heels.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill., following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-21. Illinois, Champaign will serve as host.
