A penalty in the 42nd minute was the difference Tuesday night as James Madison knocked off No. 1 UNC, 1-0
James Madison earned a free kick late in the first half in the Carolina defensive third and sent the ensuing free kick into the box. Sophomore Jordan McCrary was whistled for a foul in the box, earning a yellow card and giving James Madison a penalty.
Christian McLaughlin stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
After a sluggish first half that saw James Madison control the tempo, the Tar Heels came out a different team in the second half.
The Tar Heels controlled possession throughout the second 45 minutes and mounted several attacks against the James Madison defense. Carolina managed six corner kicks in the second half and outshot the Dukes 4-2 but were unable to find the equalizer.
The loss is the first of the year for the Tar Heels who fall to 4-1-0 on the year. The loss also snaps a school-record 16 game unbeaten streak dating back to a 1-0 road loss at Davidson a year ago.
Carolina will look to bounce back Friday when it hosts ACC foe Wake Forest at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
