Freshman Jonathan Campbell headed home a Chipper Root free kick in the 77th minute to provide Carolina a 1-0 victory at Winthrop in a preseason friendly Wednesday night.

After earning a free kick five yards outside the 18-yard box, Root stepped up and sent a ball toward the back post over a three-man wall.

Campbell was on the receiving end of the perfect cross and headed the ball toward the far corner of the goal past the Winthrop keeper.

The goal would be the only one of the friendly as the Tar Heel defense held the Eagles to one shot on target and three overall for the match.

Carolina racked up 12 shots on the evening, including three on target as the Tar Heels controlled possession throughout the contest.

Next up for the Tar Heels will be a visit from Coastal Carolina for another preseason friendly set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19 at WakeMed Soccer Park.
